The Powderhorn Park Neighborhood Association (PPNA) in collaboration with the Minneapolis Parks & Recreation Board (MPRB) will host the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration, at the Powderhorn Recreation Center, on Monday, January 20, 2025, from 10:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

This MLK event will mark the 27th year honoring the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., which continues to fuel a positive impact on lives today. His compelling vision and actions toward advancing equity and justice through community love and togetherness are important now more than ever before.

The MLK celebration will feature several performing artists, community partners driving clear examples of equity forward work, a complimentary lunch, a fun-filled gift station for kids, and an overall experience founded on the principles and beliefs upheld by Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. This year’s lunch will be catered by Chin Dian Kitchen, a unique blend of Chinese and Indian cooking techniques with hints of Malaysian and Vietnamese flavors.

As an example of embracing the ideas and principles espoused by the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. PPNA will take time to uplift an emerging initiative called One South – A Project of Southside United Neighborhoods. Alongside seven other neighborhood organizations, this initiative seeks to unlock a new era of collaboration that furthers efficacy, efficiency, and sustainability in how community-centered civic engagement helps enliven South Minneapolis over the next few decades.

Performances will kick off with divine gospel music by lauded Worship Leader Monroe “Page” Page II. Award-winning spoken word artist and bestselling author, Joe Davis will perform next using poetry to power possibility, diving deeper into authenticity and community. Mizz Mercedes & Rondo Double Dutch will spread LOVE, peace, and UNITY in the community with an energetic performance. PPNA is thrilled to also welcome Brass Solidarity to this year’s event. Brass Solidarity is a convergence of musicians, activists, and community members using their sound as a voice for justice and an advocate for Black Lives. They were birthed from the movement for Black Liberation in George Floyd Square, meeting weekly as a continuous offering to the community. Their music is by the people and for the people as a passionate campaign to spread love and uplift BIPOC communities.

This event is committed to uplifting voices for change, creating space for community connections, and modeling the power of intergenerational and multi-cultural joy.
